This is an amazing story. Anyone interested in what things were like for German civilians as World War 2 came to an end should also look at the interviews with Raymond Elias on this site. The general "received wisdom" is that the advancing Russian troops were out of control and largely brutalised everyone, but Raymond's account also tells of encountering kindness in what was otherwise a terrible situation. Fascinating stuff. SP
