Alex Wheatle took part in the Brixton Riots of April 1981. He is also an award-winning novelist who wrote East of Acre Lane, published in 2001, which was inspired by the Brixton riots. Here he describes the aftermath and the devastation that was left after the rioting.

It's great to hear Alex's memories of this time, and especially to look at it in conjunction with the account from the police officer who was on the other side of the line. It's also excellent to hear that some good came out of it for Alex - it "gave him a career" is a writer. Outstanding memoir.
