A 3 minute silent protest brings Dhaka to a standstill during the 2013 Shahbag Protest

Incredible scenes took place across Dhaka, Bangladesh in early 2013 when thousands of people gathered at Shahbag Square and to the streets, bringing Dhaka to a standstill by forming human chains and standing in silence. The protesters demanded that Abdul Quader Mollah and others were sentenced to death after being found guilty of allegedly committing war crimes during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 which resulted in "East Pakistan's" breakaway from Pakistan and established Bangladesh as a sovereign nation.

British Guiana was the name of the British colony on the northern coast of South America, now the independent nation of Guyana. The country was captured by the British in 1796 and officially ceded to the United Kingdom in 1814. The colony's capital was at Georgetown (known as Stabroek prior to 1812). On 26th May 1966 Guyana became independent from the UK. Here Mrs Jagan talks about her memories of that time as the British influence left her country.
