Tara Ramdeen's family moved to Trinidad from India to work in the plantations. They ended up settling there and it is where she spent a very happy childhood, although she did feel elements of separation from the Afro-Caribbean community. In this interview Tara explains what life was like on the beautiful, self-sufficient island and how her family maintained their Indian culture in such vastly different surroundings.

Tara Ramdeen speaks of how her grandfather moved over from India in the early 20th Century to Trinidad, along with many others who came over to work on the plantations. Life was very tough for poor families back then but he managed to work his way up and buy some land on which he built self-help houses and played Indian musical instruments with travelling musicians. Tara speaks of how slaves were brought over and the harsh circumstances they faced. She speaks of her childhood in Trinidad and how she rebelled against anything Indian and was frightened into wanting to become a Christian because of what she was told at school. She also speaks of her early memories of this great man, her grandfather, and his ideals that have stayed with her to this day...
