As a pacifist and working for the international Quaker relief movement immediately after the Second World War, Lilian Cadoux describes the absolute destruction of German cities including Cologne and Dresden. 'The unbelievable living conditions that the surviving German people had to endure were far worse than that of the British'. She was not a fan of Churchill ' I never liked that growling aggressive tone' and describes contributing to national discussion on, and discovering little known detail about the firebombing of Dresden. Lilian finally describes the beautiful Frauenkirche (Dresden Cathedral) which was rebuilt 60 years after it was destroyed, allowing her daughter to make a pilgrimage to place Lilian's husbands name in the book of remembrance, as a long term victim.

Sister Zela describes the plight of herself, sister and Mother at moving from place to place in Burma to escape aerial bombardment, and then being excited at the prospect of crossing the jungle into India on elephants borrowed from cousins. And as refugees being relieved at meeting up with her father again, who had to cross the jungle on foot, and appeared 'like a stick'. Finally Zela recalls the inner strength and courage her mother displayed, and how all these experiences as a child contributed to her own broad understanding of her faith.

Stan Hope - RAF evader (part 1)

On 8th December 1942 Stan Hope was the navigator/camera operator in an RAF Mosquito on a photo reconnaissance mission to Austria. When the aircraft developed a fault the pilot decided they could not reach Britain and so he and Stan would both have to bail out and the plane would be set to crash. They were over German occupied Belgium, and Stan landed by parachute in the countryside. He had visited its capital Brussels before the war, and even spoke a little French, and so he headed for this city in the hope that he'd find safe refuge there from the occupying German troops. He would then try to reach 'neutral' Spain via occupied France. While in Brussels he enjoyed a surprisingly sociable time over Xmas, thanks to the kindness, hospitality and courage of the Belgian family which hid him.
