Everyday life and tradition in remote Sweden during the 50s and 60s (Part 1)
Christina Andren was born and lived in Sweden up until the 1960s where she moved to the USA to start a new life. In this interview she speaks of the beautiful, remote mountain village where she spent her childhood. Christina explains what life was like there; how people coped with the extreme surroundings and freezing weather, typical food and some of the traditions they partook in.
Leaving Trinidad for London in the 1960s
In the concluding part of her interview Tara Ramdeen recounts the journey she made almost 60 years ago when she left her tropical island life in Trinidad and went on a 3 week boat journey to come to England and start a career in nursing in the 1960s.
Life in Trinidad for an Indian family in the 1950s
Tara Ramdeen's family moved to Trinidad from India to work in the plantations. They ended up settling there and it is where she spent a very happy childhood, although she did feel elements of separation from the Afro-Caribbean community. In this interview Tara explains what life was like on the beautiful, self-sufficient island and how her family maintained their Indian culture in such vastly different surroundings.
Spanish protests in Plaza de Catalunya 28th May 2011
Currently all over Spain there are a huge series of protests going on. They are a response to what are considered to be many unjust political and economic legislations. The government is believed to not be doing enough to help the terrible economic climate currently facing Spain. Young people, the unemployed, students, workers, retirees, people wanting to get on the property ladder... They are the worst affected and in these protests they are all are united in making politicians take notice and change their ways. This protest took place on 28/5/2011 in the Plaza de Catalunya in Barcelona. For several hours groups of protestors united to make as much noise as possible before the political speeches began. Rationing and and Children's Routines during WW2
In the second part of his interview Alex talks about rationing during the Second World War and how families struggled on a daily basis to feed themselves with the tiny quantities they were allowed. He talks of how his mother had to scrub floors to make ends meet whilst his father was away in the army, and of the short while he spent away when he was evacuated as a boy of 4. Alex also remembers a couple of cheeky adventures him and his friends used to embark on to get around their sweet cravings!
