This privacy policy sets out how StoryVault uses and protects any information that you give StoryVault when you use this website.

StoryVault is committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. Should we ask you to provide certain information by which you can be identified when using this website, then you can be assured that it will only be used in accordance with this privacy statement.

StoryVault may change this policy from time to time by updating this page. You should check this page from time to time to ensure that you are happy with any changes. This policy is effective from 1st January 2010.

What we collect

When you register with StoryVault we may collect the following information:

  • Name and job title
  • Contact information including email address
  • Demographic information such as postcode, preferences and interests

What we do with the information we gather?

We require this information to understand your needs and provide you with a better service, and in particular for the following reasons:

  • Internal record keeping
  • We may periodically send out information which we think you may find interesting using the email address which you have provided
  • We may use the information to improve our products and services
  • We may use the information to customise the website according to your interests

When you enter StoryVault we collect your browser type and IP address which we collect for all Users. We also store certain information from your browser using "cookies." A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer's hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site. We use session ID cookies to confirm that users are logged in. These cookies terminate once the user closes the browser. By default, we use a persistent cookie that stores your login ID (but not your password) to make it easier for you to login when you come back to StoryVault You can remove or block this cookie using the settings in your browser if you want to disable this convenience feature.

On StoryVault you may set up your personal Profile, Create a Tree, form relationships, send messages, perform searches and queries and form groups. We retain this information so you can return to view prior messages you have sent or easily see your contact list. When you update information, we usually keep a backup copy of the prior version for a reasonable period of time to enable reversion to the prior version of that information.

Users post User Content (as defined in the StoryVault Terms of Use) on the Site at your own risk and we cannot and do not guarantee that User Content you post on the Site will not be viewed by unauthorised persons. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the Site. You understand and acknowledge that, even after removal, copies of User Content may remain viewable in cached and archived pages or if other Users have copied or stored your User Content.

Any improper collection or misuse of information provided on StoryVault is a violation of StoryVault's Terms of Service and should be reported to reportabuse@storyvault.co.uk.

If you choose to use our invitation service to tell a friend or family member about our site, we will ask you for information needed to send the invitation, such as your friend or family member's email address. We will send your friend or family member an email in your name inviting him or her to visit the site. StoryVault stores this information to send invitations and reminders, to register a friend or family member connection if your invitation is accepted, and to allow you to see invitations you have sent.

StoryVault will also alert Users via the email address provided by the User of any messages sent through the website.

Contact/Family information

When you choose to invite others to StoryVault to view content or edit your tree, StoryVault will ask you for your contacts e-mail address. StoryVault will only use this information for the purpose of contacting your contact with their access details and will not use the information for marketing purposes. When creating a family tree you must be sure that you have obtained the consent of the family member and that information or material you wish to place on the site about your living relatives is only posted with their prior knowledge and consent.

Security

We are committed to ensuring that your information is secure. In order to prevent unauthorised access or disclosure we have put in place suitable physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.

You are solely responsible for your interactions with other StoryVault users. We reserve the right, but have no obligation, to monitor disputes between you and other users.

We will not sell, distribute or lease your personal information to third parties unless we have your permission or are required by law to do so. We may use your personal information to send you promotional information about third parties which we think you may find interesting if you tell us that you wish this to happen.

Eligibility

Membership in the Service is void where prohibited. This Site is intended solely for users who are eight (8) years of age or older, and users of the Site under 18 who are currently in primary, secondary school or college.

We recommend that children between the ages of 8 - 13 ask their parents for permission before sending any information about themselves to anyone over the Internet.

Any registration by, use of or access to the Site by anyone under 8, or by anyone who is under 18 and not in school or college, is unauthorised, unlicensed and in violation of these Terms of Use. By using the Service or the Site, you represent and warrant that you are 8 or older and in school or college, or else that you are 18 or older, and that you agree to and to abide by all of the terms and conditions of this Agreement.

Account Termination Policy

In accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and other applicable law, StoryVault reserves the right to change the conditions of use and services and to terminate a User's access to the StoryVault website, if under appropriate circumstances; they are deemed to be a repeat infringer.

StoryVault may also at its sole discretion limit access to the Site and/or terminate the memberships of any users who infringe any intellectual property rights of others, whether or not there is any repeat infringement.
