Elizabeth Gladys 'Millvina' Dean - Titanic Survivor
1912-2009
Sunday the 31st of May 2009 saw the end of an era. Not that Millvina Dean remembered much about the infamous night of the 15th April 1912 - she was a nine-week old babe in arms - but, thanks to the quick reactions of her father Bertram, she did survive the world's best known civil shipping disaster and grew up to learn the story of that fateful night. Placed in a canvas bag Millvina was taken to the lifeboat which would carry her, her mother and her brother back to the ill-fated ship's port of departure at Southampton, England. Sadly, Bertram was lost along with 1,516 other passengers and crew.

Settling in the city the Dean family thought they were leaving forever back in 1912, Millvina frequently spoke about the sinking and became an icon of the Titanic story. In the last months of her life Millvina used appearance fees and the proceeds from the sale of her Titanic memorabilia to fund the Hampshire care home where she passed away on Sunday at the age of 97.
